Evaluation for shelter and I-Dot project
Evaluation
This project has been the most challenging project I’ve done so far. I feel a big factor of this is that I haven’t managed my time very well as I have felt a bit unsure on my development within the first project which was the shelter project. Although I haven’t felt hugely motivated with this project, I feel towards the end I have created a good body of work and I should have more confidence in myself going forward.
The first project (Shelter project) started off by choosing a route to go down. I chose to focus on creating a shelter to produce duvet cover that was inspired by the environment of looking after our soul and mental state. The shelter project involved mood boards after board boards of continuous development, to show a clear indication of the meaning behind the shelter and what I will be creating within it. I feel that the mood board have helped me understand how to develop my work and break it down into a clear simple meaning to and audience that will be looking at them.
Within my research of soul and mental state I did some research to find out what truly helps us as humans cope and look after our souls and minds. I based my audience on a young homeless girl as I felt this would be a suitable client for the prints I wanted to create. Something that popped up a lot was Nature, I found that nature helps human being escape from their problems and feeling a sense of freedom from it. I also came across the feeling that colours give us, they let of many emotions, calmness, comfort, stability and so on. I felt this would work well with nature as I can combine both nature and colours together to link back to my concept of looking after our soul and mental state.
From this I sketch from photos that I have of nature. I have a family home in Devon where I personally find a sense of escape from myself. When I go to Devon, I take many photos of the beautiful scenery, flowers, trees, sky’s etc. I then started to draw in my usual abstract style and began to create some nature inspired duvet prints with a bold vibrant colour pallet. I then used my research of the meaning of colours to write down the meaning of every colour used in my prints.
Furthering on from these designs I had to start creating for the I-Dot project. I didn’t have much time on my hands for this project, so I didn’t want to over complicate anything for myself. Therefore, I decided to keep with the same theme but changed my concept and audience for a kid’s playroom. This time I wanted to put my prints onto wallpaper, this meant that I needed to make my prints more into repeat pattern then my first project. Although I kept with the theme of nature, I wanted to make them a bit busier then my Shelter project as I love a bold busy wallpaper look. Making the wallpaper to scale was a little challenging at first as I didn’t understand how to present my work as a wallpaper sample, but after a while I got the hand of it and ended up using new software’s ( AVA, Illustrator) that I don’t tend to use much and ended up using them more then photoshop (which I usually use).
Overall, I feel these two projects have really helped me understand the development of work and how that should be clearly shown. I will continue to use mood boards in other projects as I feel that they show the development well. Improving moving forward I want to really focus on my time management and not let pressure get the better of me.
